How do I get to the ROM monitor?
- Non-ADB keyboards
If the system is running,
hold down BOTH command keys and press
the ` key which is over the 7 on the keypad. That
bring up the "NMI Mini monitor". Enter halt
which will sync and halt the system and then
bring you to the ROM monitor.
If the system NOT is running,
power on the machine and wait until the "Testing System"
message passes, and then hold down BOTH command
keys and press the ` key which is over
the 7 on the keypad.
- ADB keyboards
Hold down both the Left ALT key and the Command Bar,
and press the ~ (tilde) key
WITHOUT pressing the shift key.
How do I boot my NeXT into single-user mode?
From the ROM monitor prompt, enter bsd -s.
Once you are in, the filesystem will be read-only.
To make any changes you will have to enter the following:
mount -n -o remount,rw /dev/sd0a /
- If you want to make any changes (ie setting user passwords),
you will want to start the NetInfo database by entering
sh /etc/rc &
How do I modify the root password?
- Goto the ROM Monitor and then boot into Single User
mode , then start NetInfo with this command
